Viktor Lisnyy: “Knowledge is a wealth that gives the chance in life”

16.11.2012 15:07:06

Every year we hear more and more complaints on detachment of soviet agrarian educational establishments from day to day realities. Reading matter that corresponds modern requirements is not enough. There are also very little places where students can do practical trainings. As a result young graduates don’t begin their careers in agriculture. But there are exceptions. We talked to Viktor Lisnyy about how Freedom Farm Bacon, Ltd. trains highly qualified specialists and keeps the leading positions on breeding market of Ukraine.

Top-7 mistakes of pork producers

«We keep pigs only for one reason — to make money», — the presentation of the famous British expert Simon Grey began with these words at the IV International Congress Profitable Pig Production. You will find his advice how to avoid the most common mistakes in pig production in this article. It is easy to be successful, the only thing that is necessary for that is to evaluate the situation correctly and make a right decision!

Urinary tract infections of sows

When the urinary tract, which is usually sterile, is colonized by bacteria it results in an infection which is most often sub-clinical. A variety of endogenous and opportunistic microbes such as E. coli, Streptococcus sp., Staphylococcus epidermidis, Klebsiella sp., Pseudomonas sp., Aeromonas sp., Bacteroides sp. are natural inhabitants of the lower urinary tract and are able to cause non specific UTI. However, they may open the door to invasion by Actinobaculumsuis, which is gram-positive, fimbriated etiologic agent of specific UTI. UTI includes cystitis (inflammation of urinary bladder) and pyelonephritis (inflammation of kidneys). The microbiological ecosystem of urinary tract of sows changes spontaneously during production events but the largest changes are caused by antimicrobial treatments.

Commercial classification of carcasses in Ukraine — a bad shot

Under the conditions of modern pig production in Ukraine products quality control has becoming more and more important. This question was solved long ago in EU countries where there are directives which administratively support the standards of carcasses classification of cattle and pigs. They set a clear gradation of meat and meat products prices thus encouraging producers’ interest and effectiveness of production. It is simple and effective scheme, but Ukrainians appear not to like simplicity and effectiveness...

Infectious atrophic rhinitis of pigs

Vitaliy Piotrovych, Ph.D of veterinary science, veterinary adviser

Lately a great deal of attention is paid to start up triggers of the complex of respiratory diseases; which are the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS)/ causative agents of porcine circovirus and mycoplasmosis. Such diseases are currently important, they are the subject for discussion at seminars, conferences, congress and in scientific and scientific-practical publications. But there are numerous infectious diseases of pigs a of bacterial etiology which are also very important as they cause the decrease of pig production profitability. Infectious atrophic rhinitis of pigs is one of them.

It is out-of-date to castrate boars

Viktor Evert, Business Manager of «Pfizer veterynarni preparaty».

Sergiy Nedogybchenko, manager of «Improvak» project in Ukraine.

The problem of smooth pig production has been increasing worldwide rapidly for consumers prefer to eat «happy» pork and they protest against animal cruelty. It calls forth not only respect for such procedures as cutting tails and blunting pig canines but also an increased attention of animal welfare organizations (in EU in particular) to the physical gelding of boars which is painful and dangerous procedure. In December in 2011 the European Commission adopted European Declaration on alternatives to surgical castration of pigs according to which EU pig producers should give up the traditional procedure completely by 2018.

Modern meat processing industry of the USA – the key word is security

Doubtless pork is one of the most popular products as it forms 37% of world meat production despite the fact pork is not consumed in many countries because of religious beliefs. China became a leader in pork production in 2011 with 49 500 million tons, the second place was taken by USA (10 332 mil tons) and the third belonged to Germany (10332 mil tons). Meanwhile the internship program in pork production of «Cochrane» carried out by USDA in spring this year (more about probation — in the previous issue) a group of Ukrainian farmers met not only pig growing technologies in USA but they were also introduced to the characteristics of processing industry. They visited manufacturing shops of the largest slaughter plant of «Farmland Foods» Company in Denison (Iowa State) that is a part of the meat giant of USA — «Smithfield Foods» company.

Aleksandr Myrnyy: “The money should be invested in people, not in the project!”

On the eve of the difficult period for agriculture of Ukraine connected with the election campaign, of the possible difficulties of the feeds due to adverse weather conditions and the threat of African swine fever spread we’ve decided to talk to an outstanding representative of pig production industry — Oleksandr Myrny. An ardent patriot of his country and co-owner of a group of farms reveals to you his own philosophy of doing business.

Management of the farm’s biosecurity

Adapted from the presentation of Alex Ramirez, PHD veterinary science, master of public health care of Iowa State University

Economic losses from porcine diseases account 20% of products costs in developed countries and 40% in developing countries. That is why biosecurity on pig farms is one of the most serious challenges of the modern pig production. Alex Ramirez is sure that the list of biosecurity measures differs from enterprise to enterprise as each farm has its own peculiarities. But there are common measures of prevention and eradication of diseases.

The effective enterprise starts with an employee taking his work as his own business.

I’ve heard Mr. Getman’s addresses at various seminars and forums on pig production repeatedly. My attention was always pulled by his deep knowledge in almost each aspect of that concerning growing pigs irrespective of what it comes to: equipment, food and feeding, genetics and economics of production or management of staff. That’s unbelievable it wasn’t an agricultural university he graduated from. But the very fact he got five certificates for his developments having appeared in his diploma thesis may give us some insights: Volodymyr Getman is an innovator and a searcher by nature. A deal of technological innovations has come into life and become popular among Ukrainian pig production enterprises owing to his successful initiative. We got closer meanwhile our training course in pig production in USA in terms of program «Cochrane». So long as a significant part of the advanced technologies of pig production of USA we were demonstrated has been already brought into use in «Dnipro-Gibryd» I just couldn’t avoid the occasion to visit his enterprise.
