Everything starts with management; the rest is a details which may be negotiated
Daughter enterprise «Fermy danam» was the first enterprise with Danish investments in pig production in Ukraine and the first enterprise that started to work with pigs of Danish genetics. The enterprise will be 14 years old in 2012. During these 14 years it remains among the most effective enterprises. A slim woman carries out the whole management of all the structure; and in the same time she manages to be a wise director, strategist and tactics, loving mother and wife.
How did it happen that a philologian started to work with pigs?
I started to search for a job when I was a 5th year student and I got acquainted with representatives of Danish company «DanAgry Ukraine». They started to import agricultural equipment in Ukraine and had ambitious plans. They were searching for the interpreter, assistant and a secretary. I came to the interview and was offered a job. The problem was that there was no demand for imported equipment Ukraine as farmers had no money for its purchasing. Then the investor decided that it would be more effective to cultivate land with imported equipment. After that American partners of our investor offered him to work with pigs and crop production together. He liked the idea.
It’s no wonder as fondness for pigs is in the nature of the Danes ...
It’s true. We found an old pig farm in Novosilky village, Kagarlyk district and made a reconstruction. The consultant invited by us from Denmark had to live soon and we were left by our own.
Were you afraid to be left without such a support?
To tell the truth it was difficult as none of the project parties had any experience in pig production. We cooperated with the head of collective farm, leased land, premises. In the beginning of 2000 our director from Denmark decided to live Ukraine and to go back home. And I was offered to inherit the helm. I was 24 years old. I had very little experience but enough responsibility and I decided to accept an offer.
What helped you not to lose heart?
To go on moving we had to believe that the business would be profitable. And we did believe. We managed to gain support of Danish Sovereign Wealth Fund. With received money we repaired the gestation unit and farrowing unit.
To receive the money we had to calculate the budget for 5 years. We didn’t have trust in figures of our calculations, as according to our forecasts «Fermy Danam would have millions of profit in 2005-2006».We convinced the Fund and receive the credit. The profit was the just as we predicted in 2005.
Do you indent to go on developing?
Of course we plan to develop. We are going to reconstruct the premises we have and also to start building new ones. The problem is that our enterprise is too close to the community and can’t develop on the same place.
What technological innovations help DE «Fermy Danam» to be among the enterprises with the highest production performance?
I would say that our enterprise is a classic example of Danish pig production. All innovations used at our enterprise are from Denmark. We always invite Danish specialist to all the reconstructions. We buy ventilation system and other equipment in Denmark. We bought the equipment of Skiold Company for our feed mill. The co-owner of this company is one of the investors of Fermy Danam. Our enterprise differs from typical Danish one only because we keep gestation sows in stalls which is forbidden in Denmark.
