Fattening is a responsible finish

Doctor Kees Scheepens is well known to us from the previous pages of the magazine as aveterinarydoctorof theworldclass and the authorof theworldknownbookseries «Pigsignals». On the 3rd Pig congress mister Scheepens interested the audience with his report about the main aspects of breeding pigs at finishing. That is why we have no other choice but to share it with the readers of our magazine.

Finishing is usually considered the easiest period in production cycle of pig production. Farmers take special care of their sows during insemination, farrowing, they also take care of newborn piglets and of growers. And it’s a pity that they drop guard just after the pigs have been transferred to fattening unit.

What can the resultsbe? It’s easy to count how much money were spent to grow the pig up to 30 kilos and how much would be lost if it dies because of inattention. After that these date must be multiplied on the percentage mortality on finishing. Pigs are such kind of animal that let us know about changes in the organism by their behavior or by appearance. Let’sanalyze the most popular finishers’ signals and find out what they mean.

Not a pig signal

Not a pig signal is a signal that is shown no texactly by apig. But ignoring those signals may lead to bad results. Disinfection of the finishing units before transferring the pigs is of essential importance for any enterprise.

It is worth emphasizing that everything must be completely dry in the building as well as completely clean. Dryness is sometimes more important than cleanness, as it does not let the bacteria spread. For example if the floor remains wet after disinfection you can be congratulated for creating the first condition for spreading of PPRS virus.

Personnel attitude

It’s much easier to work with pigs when you have a proper attitude to them.

Do you talk to pigs in a quiet manner? Doyoupet their heads when you are on the farm? Iftheanswers are positive it’s quite possible that they will display interest to you again. And if you make noise or use force you of course will be able to get them under control quickly, butsmall pig signals will be beyond your attention.

Feeding

Pigs which a retransferred from one feeding system to other face new difficulties: they have to findnew feeding place, get acquainted with new feeding system, etc. All these reasons predetermine uneasy beginning of life at the new place. That is why: watch — think— act!

Be aware that the feed must have a pleasant smell and taste. As pigs have3-4times more tastebuds than humans. Your pigs will have nothing against being fed with byproducts of breweries, dairy plants and confectioners’. They prefer sweet-and-sour products.

Too much fat?

It is well known that feeding is considered efficient when pigs have leant issue instead of faton the back. So check the backs of your pigs. Ifthere are many boars with excess fat you must cull them. Boars eat more and faster than sows that’s way they have more fat. It can be prevented by using another feeding line.
