Nadiya Kudlay: “Definitely we know how to survive. But we have to learn how to live”

13.06.2011 15:33:00

Neat residence of “Elita” Ltd is a former research station, which was a heritage without windows with broken tables and chairs. The farm was renewed from a desert complex on the suburbs of Teresino village. The farm is fairly called “Elita” because it is among the best breeding farms of Ukraine. Nadiya Dmytrivna has a gift to convince, can spark with an idea. She often jokes: “If I was told to be a president of Uganda in 18 years old I would be”. She hasn’t lost her positivism by now. She comments on the prospects of Ukraine: “I am sure that Ukrainians will overcome any difficulties, because our people had experienced a lot”. But she dreams: “We definitely know how to survive. But we have to learn how to live”

Spring is outside it is time for the revivals and beginnings. Do you plan something new for “Elita” Ltd?

— To finish building of the elevator, which we started last year, to start building of our own oil mill for soy bean processing. But the main is to start our cherished project — building a nucleus pig farm.

— It must be very difficult to embody such an important project?

— First of all this branch of animal husbandry is cost-based and demands a considerable start – up budget, because the heard of appropriate genetics costs a lot. We plan a nucleus farm that will place 600 heads. Besides our people are not aware of genetics importance. Pig production has three basics. They are technologies, feeding and genetics. Some 10 years ago there was a shortage of the latest news about technologies; but there are a lot of sources nowadays. A lot of companies and their technologies are presented on our market. So we have a possibility to analyze, find out what works in our conditions. Another question is that even knowing how to do correct not everyone does it. As well as we have no problems with feeds. A lot of companies offer their feeds and there plenty of laboratories to test it. The point is to comprehend what ration is, and to know how to choose the right one. In other words the situation with the first two basics of successful pig production is more or less o.k. We approached the third one and it is genetics. We don’t have enough pig producers that realize the importance of healthy heard with high productive potential. The quantity of pigs per litter, meat content, daily gain depends on genetics and it all means profit. It’s a positive trend that many genetics companies are represented on the Ukrainian market; it is the chance for the producer to make the appropriate choice. The rules just have to be equal for everyone.

— What do you mean?

We don’t have common state control and monitor of genetic companies’ data. We have lack of information to be able to make right decisions. It’s not clear in what direction to develop the branch whether to support it, or there is no need to subsidies it, whether to give state help to selection or to build fattening farms. There is a balance but there are no truthful data for the government to find it. I can’t see what place ranks my enterprise and map out a strategy.
