Yuriy Momot: “Biogas perspectives of Ukraine”

— Yuriy Momot, the chief of animal husbandry department of “Agro-Oven” Ltd:

“Our enterprise was the first in Ukraine that started using biogas technologies and has been doing it successfully. It was joint project with the Dutch government and it was put into operation in Magdanynivka region in 2003.”

— What pushed “Agro-Oven” to start building biogas unit when other Ukrainian enterprises didn’t even think about it. Did you predict difficulties that you were to face? Was the project successful?

—Intergovernmental Dutch – Ukrainian project on “green energy” introduction in CIS began in 1998. Ten enterprises took part in tender and “Agro-Oven” was the winner. The building of biogas unit for organic waste utilization started in 2000, in Olenivka village. It was launched in three years. It was planned and built by the Dutch company “BTG”, using equipment from Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. The planned power of the unit is processing 80 meters3 of slurry per day. It is also possible to process any organic matter. Such units are usually built and planned according to the available raw material on the enterprise. The lack of knowledge was the first problem we faced. We hadn’t any information on bioenergy. We had to find necessary literature by ourselves, learn foreign experience, and invite foreign experts. But the best teacher was biogas unit itself. We learned it working with it, than taught employees, launched and improved by ourselves. Economic and ecological situations stimulate to introduce modern leading alternative technologies in agriculture. By present time our enterprise “Agro-Oven” has gained considerable experience in that direction and keeps up with the times.

What are the advantages of biogas technology of manure utilization?

— The main purpose of all modern technologies of manure utilization is optimization of environment and transformation of the manure into bio fertilizer. Besides, biogas technology saves time and territory. Due to biogas unit we receive bio fertilizer from pigs manure in 30 days. This process is prolonged for 3 years if keeping the manure in lagoons. Besides, if the farm has 3 hectares of land 1 hectare should be allocated for lagoons. We need half less area for building of biogas unit. The main advantage of biogas unit is the production of our own electrical and heat energy. It’s not just a reserve source of electricity and heat but a possibility to reduce costs of production, due to reduction of energy costs.

Why do you consider biogas technology perspective for Ukraine?

— The demand for environment on animal farms has become resonant, as well as for increasing part of renewable sources in energy production. For example, in Germany 32% of electrical power is of alternative origin, 7% of it is made of biogas. The second “wave” of biogas units building has been lasting now. Our natural resources are not favorable for using sun or wind energy, but we have enough of organic matter, and I am sure that Ukraine will be lifted on that “biogas wave”. We have not only ecological, but also economic reasons for that.

We started building the biogas unit in 2000 when the price for electricity was 0.07 UAH/kW/H. It was very cheap and our colleagues watched the situation with amazement. Today the price is 0.80-0.85 UAH/kW/H. Evidently the price surge in power industry will continue. So, we have to start searching the way out today. And the pay off period of biogas project will be 3-4 years in Ukraine.

Learning biogas technologies has become a hobby for Yuriy Mykolayovych. Why?

— Using what system of biogas processing the best results can be achieved?

—What are the possibilities for the development of biogas technologies in Ukraine?

— There are no doubts as to the advantages of biogas technology. But has it any disadvantages? And how does “Agro-Oven” Ltd cope with them?

— What factors should be paid attention to while building biogas unit?
