Foreign managers Ukrainian companies: pros and cons of cooperation

Expats – it is rather new term in the Ukrainian language and is not included in the dictionary. Despite this, inUkraineit is often used in different contexts. So, first of all, we should define the terminology used.

Expat (Latin ex – outside, patria – fatherland) – an employee who was assigned to work outside their country. In this case the principal will be noted that the expats from the start were considering their movement as temporary. Despite the definition, under which fall all foreign citizens who come to work, expats inUkraineare only top managers and leading specialists working under contract.

Fashion for expats – foreign managers and specialists inUkraine – was launched in mid-1990 due to lack of experience in market conditions in local management. Unlike other sectors, agriculture in this trend manifested later – less than a decade ago. Then, along with demand for new equipment and technology has increased in people who can work with them and able to transmit their experience to others.

In preparing this article, we talked with the leaders of a dozen companies that had a direct experience of attracting expats. We tried to understand more who and why invited these specialists in the Ukrainian agribusiness, and to identify pros and cons of such involvement.

Speaking of qualified staff, it attracted mainly expats where you want unique knowledge in specific areas of agriculture, are not yet sufficiently developed in Ukraine, or, if necessary, the manufacturing expertise to improve the technology used. This is dictated, first, that the invited experts have more experience in building business processes and implementing new quality control standards. If the requirements for the positions include international experience, the company is mostly like to be willing to consider bringing expats. Employers understand that foreign managers bring with them specific expertise in the field of general management, and in more specific areas: technology and latest developments in different industries.
