Zootechnologia, LLC: «Full attention to staff and work with animals»

03.06.2014 09:45:00

In summer, the most popular direction in Ukraine is the South. Our magazine decided, «to keep up» and went to Kherson to communicate with Tetiana Larina, production manager of Zootechnologia, LLC. She readily told about farm’s work and shared with plans of its development. It looks as if the top-10 Ukrainian pigfarms will change soon!

  • Tetiana, tell us more about farm: how it created and developed what Zootechnologia is today?

  • Zootechnologia, LLC is Ukrainian farm without foreign investments. It practices only the pigbreeding. We have a full cycle: from the sow farm to the finishing stage, we deliver the livestock live weight. The farm builds up gradually, so to say by its own speed. Moneys are borrowed, and we need return to bank. We finished the finishing unit only this year.

All sow herds are held on one area in Novoraisk village (Beryslav district). The history of Zootechnologia has started here. In soviet times there was a big pigfarm for 54 thousand heads. After the Soviet Union’s break-up it was stolen by unknown, pigs were killed. In 2004 owners of Zootechnologia bought the remains of pigcomplex and started to develop the branch anew. In course of time owners bought one more destroyed farm in Vynogradovo village (Tsurupynsk district), now there is our second production area — finishing unit.

  • Now big farms want to become vertically-integrated. Do you have such ambitious plans?

  • We do not discuss the perspective of crop farming. However I won’t deny such alternative. In Kherson region, this branch is rather risky because of weather conditions — the step zone and the watering doesn’t cost cheap. That’s why we buy the raw materials by now and prepare the feed ourselves as we have our own feed mill plant. The technologist looks after the quality of ingredients and creates diets.
Simultaneously we have one of vertical integration components — own slaughterhouse. It is a separate structure, and it buys pigs by market price. They slaughter and sell fresh meat (small processing).

  • Ukraine has signed the political and economic parts of contract with EU. What do you think about such development direction of our country? Are you ready for new work conditions?

  • As a producer, I understand that we have to overcome many barriers to match the European rules. These are the group pens for sows (we hold them individually), certain size of floor slats, strict ecological standards etc.
On the other hand, the biggest hope for association with EU is that our legislation will finally become clear and norms won’t contradict each other.

With no doubt, regulatory agencies exist to check and not allow braking rules. But it seems that producer for them is an enemy, they do not try to understand him and help but vice versa to complicate its work. State organs have to not only detect violations and punish for them, but take measures of warning divergences and consult producers.

What our veterinary service is only worth? The methodology shocks! Nowadays, state veterinarians actively fight against ASF: they torture us with calls and examinations, but in that very moment doesn’t even know how many pigs are held in neighbouring village, that is in three kilometres from our processing area. However, this is the main danger! Regional veterinary service has to control livestock both: farms and population. Then its work will be effective. Now we are sitting on a volcano, because we are not sure that tomorrow we do not hit the quarantine area.

  • Tetiana, how do you think, what is the formula of successful production?

  • When employees are at their own places and they are able to hear each other and work as a team. It is not only words, but the experience of our farm.

  1. How do the farm build the everyday work?
  2. What country’s experience does Zootechnologia focus on?
  3. What are the genetic base and capacities of the farm?
  4. What are the ways of biosecurity assurance?
  5. How does the farm operate in conditions of annexed Crimea?
  6. What are the principles of staff work? According to what criteria are the workers selected?
  7. The herd management: how do pigs fed, when they are weaned and what percent of mortality is allowed?

You can find answers for these and other questions in the full version of the interview in the magazine «Profitable Pig Production», № 3 (21) 2014.
