Nucleuses in Ukraine are the warrant of pig farming development

Almost a year has passed since the Pig breeding center, LLC opened its door for all, who wish to get acquainted with new energy-saving production technologies, which are new for Ukrainian market. Eugene Kryvorot, the director, told about work and first results of the enterprise.

— Eugene, the breeding animal raising is preceded by a long-period preparation, as the requirements of their management are very high. What steps you consider decisive?

— At the present moment, we did 99% of demands, the nucleus-pigfarm should correspond to. We built the new unit on a «clean» area, where has never been any farm. Held all sanitary regulations: the distance to the closest populates place is 2 km, we built modern disinfestation posts (the entrance to the unit is only through showers, personal things, including clothes, do not come into a «clean zone»).

As the animals are breeding, the great attention was paid to the microclimate: there is a lack of direct air input from outside, the room temperature is constant, whatever the season. In addition we almost do not spend the electricity neither for heating nor for cooling (except brooders and water rugs for the smallest piglets). But I should say, in winter we had some problems with room temperature setting, until we understood how the equipment was working.

The breeding stock market is rather specific, as many pig producers think that’s better to overpay and bring the young animals from abroad. Whom do you consider your future clients?

— Actually, it’s very difficult to overpersuade the producers that the homeland livestock is not worse that the imported one! All the more, the swine import involves some problems: except the high price of one head (especially at the preset euro exchange rate), there are epizootic risks. The case example: the deliveries from Europe became complicated because of ASF in Poland so that isolated Ukrainian pigmen from genetic «donor». That’s why the Ukrainian nucleus farm with livestock GGP, which have the higher health status, gives the confidence in the future.

Nowadays we form the sales department, which will «promote» the livestock among the existing in market pig complexes. One more task is to give the documentary evidence of the highest status of our livestock. Those, who encounter this practically in Ukraine, understand that the procedure, mildly speaking, is rather complicated, even if all the demands are accomplished. The only consolation is that the Working group under the jurisdiction of Ministry APF initiated by Ukrainian Pig Producers Association, choose the creation of management system for breeding resources in Ukraine as one of its activities.

Last year the total project cost was estimated in 100 million UAH. How has the present situation in the country corrected these plans?

— We cannot «fit» to the previously mentioned sum because of the essential increasing euro in price. We have already put in use the farrowing house for 600 heads, growing unit for 4,5 thousands piglets and boar house for 40 heads with a laboratory. Altogether, the project is sized for 1200 sows of closed cycle. But we decided to stop the second phase of building. As its cost has already increased by at least 10 million UAH, according to approximate calculations. We need to bear the difficult moment in country’s life, and when the situation will settle we will renew the investments.

1. What genetic lines the enterprise is working with and why?

2. Which criteria should one orients on while choosing the genetics?

3. How does the animal selection take place?

4. What are the development outlooks of «Pig breeding center» for the nearest future?
