Is this a crisis?

«Crimean issue can reformat our pork market»

Dmitro Rozhko, director, «Priluky-GarantBud» Ltd., Chernigov region

Crimean issue can reformat our pork market, because now we don’t know if we have an ability to supply livestock to the peninsula. When the southern regions can’t take the supply, it should be redirected to the «mainland». From another hand, Russia banned export from America and members of EU, so the lack of pork will increase. And the supply of pork from Russia to Crimea is under the question. If the import from Ukrainian «mainland» would be banned, can happen that people in Crimea will eat the Brazilian meat. Unfortunately, that our economics suffers from politics.

If we talk about the consequences of «Crimean crisis» and the events that are happening now, the sales of piglets slightly decreased. Men are taken to the army and the farms remain on the «female shoulders». Therefore, people buy fewer piglets. If the situation go worse, the part of industrial production will grow faster than it is predicted.

«Even in the depreciation of hryvnia there are positive sides»

Mher Kuyumchyan, co-owner of PE «Sigma», Dnipropetrovsk region

It is good, that «Crimean crisis» didn’t affect directly the business, except the fact, that we have more than five mobilized men and it is not easy to find another specialists. But the sales have not fallen. And even the depreciation of hryvnia makes some positive: import becomes more expensive, so the demand for Ukrainian pork increases. We don’t have a lot of foreign components that we use in growing pigs. Prices on live pigs are increasing. So, there is nothing to complain about. The only tangible problem is the lack of monocalcuim phosphate. The largest supplier was the Russian company and now the cooperation is interrupted because of political situation. There are alternatives, but to regroup, we need some time.

«We don’t feel sharp negatives on the farm»

Ruslan Pisarenko, director of livestock on «Kamchatka» Ltd., Khmelnytsky region

«Crimean crisis» didn’t hook the Khmelnytsky region, but made the economiс crisis in the country deeper. Fortunately, we don’t have loans in foreign currency. The devaluation of hryvnia has led only to more expensive prestarters and premixes, which we add to the pigs’ diets.

On the other hand, the sales of piglets revives. We have got some new partners. So that we don’t feel sharp negatives on our farm.

Other thoughts from all Ukrainian regions you can find in the full version of the article in the magazine «Profitable Pig Production», № 2 (20) 2014.
