Hlobyno pig farm is a Gulliver of Poltava pig production

27.12.2011 17:12:26

Lately there are less and less people that are really found of what they do. That is why it was a real pleasure to get acquainted with the representatives of Hlobyno pig farm. Poltava region is considered to be the heart of pig production of Ukraine. The active development and the philosophy of that enterprise without any doubts only fortify the positions of the region.

What pushed you to devote yourself to pig production?

It was not at all a push but a fortune. I was offered a job by a founder of the group of companies «Hlobyno» Oleksandr Kuzminskyi just after graduating. I started my working experience as an ordinary foreman at the meat processing plant of the company. Then I worked as ventilating and refrigerating systems manager and after that I worked as a main engineer. In 2010 Oleksandr Kuzminskyi offered me a position of the manager of a local pig farm. After short thinking I agreed. I don’t regret about it at all.

Group of companies «Hlobyno» decided to develop pig production in 2005. Was it really so difficult to find a reliable supplier of pigs in order not to be involved in something new and unknown?

There were several reasons for that that time. First of all the volumes of production of really qualified pork were small. Besides there were no stability neither in quality pork nor in prices and pork import, because the borders were closed or opened time after time. So the needs in qualified pork pushed the owner of the business to develop pig production.

Did the purposes of Hlobyno pig farm changed during 6 years?

The point is that meat processing plant has been developing very dynamically and it is difficult for pig production to keep up with it. Before slaughtering a pig one must provide good housing conditions for it, grow a sow, inseminate a sow and grow piglets. We increased the capacity of a pig farm twice, but sill we cover only 40% of the demand of the meat processing plant. So the purposes are the same only their volumes are bigger.

What plans do you have nowadays and which of them are implemented?

The capacity of the pig farm is going to be 400 thousand pigs per year by 2014. It is the capacity of 3 commercial sow farms with 5 000 sows each. Each of these farms needs 3 nursery sites with the capacity of 11 thousand heads each, and finishing unit with the capacity of 40 thousand pigs.

We have 4 active farms today; they are: commercial sow farm with the capacity of 4500sows, two finishing farms and one nucleus.

Nucleus is what we are proud of. When I started working on the enterprise the reconstruction of an old farm had just started. Now it is a modern pig farm of closed type. It is a place where 1200 GGP sows are kept.

The building of the second commercial sow farm has been recently finished and the heard from the nucleus farm is been transferring there. We expect that transferring500-600heads during 8 months will let the farm work in full capacity. The first nursery site is ready for that. The sows will be inseminated in February. So we have to finish all buildings and reconstructions we have started by July 2012. Besides we began to get ready for building of the third commercial sow farm with the capacity of 5000 sows. So the timetable is tight.

What genetic is used on the nucleus farm?
